How can we prevent the elderly from hazardous falls? - new inventions in nursing field 2009

According to the NYT article there are approximately 47,000 seniors fall each year. This represents approximately 3 people per week! What inventions during or traditional forms can help people to fall? What nurses in nursing homes to prevent falls?
-Edit-In the NYT article, walkers are dangerous for the elderly, because they are stumbling over their own works rather aid or do not help when a rocky road. I know it's called a new invention Isho model can recognize patterns, and other abnormal balance. Is there more to these inventions?
